About the Artist
Originally born in Lima, Perú, Rocío Nureña moved to the United States in 2001. Living in beautiful Pacific Northwest, she fell in love with photography in 2012 while working towards her associate degree and taking a black and white photography class at Edmonds Community College. Nureña graduated from The University of Washington with a B.A. in International Studies in 2015 and has worked as a freelance event photographer for some years. Nureña enrolled in a master’s in photography Degree at the Academy of Art University in 2021 and graduated in June of 2023.
Nureña uses photography to express herself and to create images that comment on social issues in her personal photographic projects. For her project When Women are the Objects, Nureña models her photographs after ads, fashion campaigns, and social media posts. Inspired by her teenage daughter experiences, who is exposed daily to images that uses women’s bodies as objects; Nureña’s images aim to start a conversation and give voice to women, especially young women, about the usage of their bodies as objects and commodities. This practice unfortunately leads to diminished women’s rights around the world and creates psychological problems on young women.
