When Women are the Objects

The photographs in this project are meant to be an educational tool that show examples of how women’s bodies have been and are being objectified in media, advertisement, language, and popular culture.

My main inspiration has been my teenage daughter, who is being exposed through social media and advertisement campaigns to images that objectify women. I became interested in making photographs that could help her identify those instances and defend herself from such practices. Moreover, this project seeks to start a conversation that could move viewers towards a better treatment of women and to stop the practice.

I got inspired and gathered information from advertisement campaigns, social media posts, language used towards women, and popular culture. The practice of calling and comparing women’s bodies and their reproductive parts to objects, diminishes women’s agency and autonomy.

As a personal choice, I have decided not to use real women as models to make the photographs; I believe that would be like objectifying them again, that is not my intention. For this reason, I have used toys, a mannequin, fruits, and a flag among other props.
